Rape, by Tiffany Johnson
For my wiki space proposal for a Women's Studies course, I chose the topic of rape. Rape is a topic that a lot of people choose not to discuss. As a result, many of us are not as knowledgeable about the different types of rape, reasons why rape is committed, or what actions to take as a victim of rape. Also, rape is mostly viewed as a crime committed by men with women always being the victim. However, this is not true because male rape is becoming a recognized crime. Rape is a serious gender issue that I feel the public must be made aware of and discussed more. My approach to the topic is to show both sides of rape including, both sexes and reasons why rape is committed. I also plan to find a video about rape as well as, include some statistics.
What is Rape?
Broadly defined as sex without consent, each state in the U.S. has their own definition and prosecution. In general, rape refers to nonconsensual sexual penetration of the body using physical force or the threat of bodily harm(3).
Women are often victims of rape, however, men can be victims as well. Sometimes women realize that a past sexual encouter was actually rape and as a result they think that their experience was different. They began to think that they are dirty, ashamed, or stupid. Certain social mythis about rape that encourage these feelings are
1. Rape happens less frequently in our society that women believe. Feminist in particular blow this out of proportion by focusing on women's victimization and women make up rape charges to get attention.
2. Women are at least partly responsible for their vicitimization in terms of their appearance and behavior (encouraging guilt).
3. Men are not totally responsible for their actions. If a woman comes on to a man sexually, it is impossible for him to stop.
Individuals may also be sexually assaulted without being raped. Sexual assault is any sexual contact without consent and/or that involves the use of force. Basically, rape is a form of sexual abuse and sexual assault but they do not imply to rape(5).

Coping has been defined in psychological terms by Susan Folkman and Richard Lazarus as 'constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands that are appraised as taxing'.
Coping is thus expending conscious effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stress or conflict. Psychological coping mechanisms are commonly termed coping strategies or coping skills. Unconscious or non conscious strategies (e.g., defense mechanisms) are generally excluded. The term coping generally refers to adaptive or constructive coping strategies, i.e., the strategies reduce stress levels. However, some coping strategies can be considered maladaptive, i.e., stress levels increase. Maladaptive coping can thus be described, in effect, as non-coping. Furthermore, the term coping generally refers to reactive coping, i.e., the coping response follows the stressor. This contrasts with proactive coping, in which a coping response aims to head off a future stressor.
Coping responses are partly controlled by personality (habitual traits), but also partly by the social context, particularly the nature of the stressful environment.
About 400 to 600 coping strategies have been identified. Classification of these strategies into a broader architecture has not yet been agreed upon. Common distinctions are often been made between various contrasting strategies, for example: problem-focused versus emotion-focused; engagement versus disengagement; cognitive versus behavioral. The psychology textbook by Weiten has provided a useful summary of three broad types of coping strategies:
