Road Trip

by Ginger Laroy Fe on May 27, 2011

MY parents talked about the many road trips they took.  According to the many stories they told us the Grand Canyon from Phoenix to Las Vegas   was the one they most enjoyed.  They explored the desert on the way to the Grand Canyon.  Mother told me about how beautiful the sights were passing through and around the canyons, deserts, and lakes, mountains, and the ruins and cacti forests.  She explained how Nevada gave her an insight into the American Southwest.  She discovered that it is home to Phoenix, which is one of the country’s largest cities.  Some 20 different tribes including the Navajo, Apache and Hopi inhabited the vast number of Native American reservations she said.

Her eyes lit up when she spoke of the most famous natural attraction the Grand Canyon.  Her wild-eyed claims of the event left her stunned and in a state of wonder.  She best remembers a stop they made in outrageous Las Vegas, a desert city surrounded in all directions by Rocky Mountains.  It is in close proximity to Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.

They also had a chance to visit Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport, and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.  She told me that if I ever had the chance to take such a trip to set aside at least 6 days to be able to take in take all of the many sights.

On their first day she had the chance to visit the largest city in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix.  She says it averages 310 days of sunshine, making climate the primary reason that visitors venture to the city. However, Phoenix has much more to offer than just fabulous weather.  It is home to one of the largest municipal parks in the world, an innovative art scene, inimitable restaurants, great shopping and prime spas.

For some recreational fun, they visited South Mountain Park and Preserve that covers over 16,000 acres and has more than 50 miles of biking, hiking and horseback riding trails.  It was a great way to explore the unforgiving desert terrain!

Roosevelt Row was a neighborhood composed of artists living and working spaces, that offers monthly events including arts festivals, street vending, live music and great food. The Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park lent them an opportunity to learn about the prehistoric and historic cultures
