The human colon is more commonly called the large intestine. It is at the junction of your appendix and your small intestine, ending at the anus. It is around 2 meter long and divided into 3 parts: the ascending colon, the transverse colon, and finally, the descending colon. Each of these names is indicative of the shape of the colon. It is in the shape of an upside down U, with the ascending part starting at the appendix. The top part of the upside down U is the transverse section, and of course the part that goes down to the anus is the descending colon.
What Does the Colon Do?
The majority of your digestion and the absorption of food occurs in your stomach and your small intestines. When it reaches your colon, all that is left is water and waste. The colon's main job is to reabsorb water, keeping you hydrated, and to process the waste as fecal matter.
