With the rapid advances in Digital camera technologies, film is becoming quite rare and traditional camera film companies like Kodak have not been able to sustain their place in the camera markets.

nice i hardly like this. may i know about that what is mega pixil and what is 2x or 5 x zoom.

Hello Black Zero, thank you for reading and commenting.

A pixel is a single dot on a display - a Mega Pixel is a term used to define how many millions of dots the digital camera can capture, so a camera with 10 Megapixels will provide a picture composed of 10 million pixels.

Zoom is a term used to specify the variable magnification that the camera lens can provide. 2 x zoom will make the object in the lens appear up to two times as large, 5 x zoom would be up to five times as large.

wow! i like the information you have shared in here D Poet... , but can i ask you to elaborate further about the Magic erase . how can i do that if i want to edite my pictures thanks and more power..

Hi Ansay, thanks for reading and commenting. :) Magic erase is a feature found in the Xara Photo & Graphic Designer and the Xara Design Pro X software. To describe it briefly, it is able to replace an area of the background that you define with samples taken from other parts of the picture - the example of the Beetle car picture above used that facility. You can also take manual control over the function when you wish to be most creative.

Hi Manesha - thanks for your comments. For most uses the 'Bridge' type cameras are a good balance between convenience and features, but if you can afford a DSLR you do have the advantage of special lenses and great pictures in dim light.

Ya, you are right. These new features are coming up from this morning if I am not mistaken.
Regarding the tactics of taking photograph, my knowledge is a bit limited. And as such I might often ask you questions in this regards.
Ine thing I want to know is, from your post, it appears that there are many lenses to choose for our DSLR Camera right?
My question is, is there a lens specially designed for use under low light?

Hello Jake

Digital SLR's should have access to a wide range of lenses - they are primarily using the same approach as conventional SLR's have for decades, so the main difference is in the digital functions. Of course when you were using a standard SLR you could choose not only the lenses, but also what film you wished to use - and those included low light (extra sensitive) film.

For a digital SLR, you might want to be sure that the model you choose has a good spec for use in low light conditions - to some extent changing the exposure time is going to cover the effective sensitivity, but a lens designed to capture as much light as possible will definitely be an advantage if you plan for instance to use the camera for wildlife shots at night - badgers and other nocturnal animals can be seen relatively easily - or study the night sky, etc.

Most people who buy a new DSLR tend to get it with the standard “normal zoom” lens. Typically it’s an 18-55mm. It’s also of moderate speed, usually around f/3.5 at the wide-angle setting and f/5.6 at the telephoto end. No doubt these are useful general-purpose lenses for getting started, but they can’t provide the ultra-wide-angle settings you may need to record scenic vistas or get the whole family into a holiday shot in a small dining room.

Also they don’t provide fast apertures in the f/2.8 range that you may need when shooting non-flash pictures in low light at lower ISO settings, and they don’t provide the shallow depth of field you may want for dramatic pictorial effects. Best to research with the supplier at the time of purchase, since the typical compact DSLR doesn't have the full range of options the professional cameras offer.

Perhaps I will extend this post sometime soon - it is a fast changing market as prices have tumbled dramatically in the last few years - my 15 yr old digital Olympus cost around £800 but is very limited compared to current equipment sold in that price range... Best wishes, Dave

Thanks Irma, well done for guessing which of the pics was analogue. :) I am perpetually tempted to add another camera to my small collection - it is however a purely amateur hobby of mine, so I would need to feel rich first, hehe. Best wishes, Dave

I have a Nikon D7000 DSLR Camera but have yet to master my photography skills. I have attended basic photography training but still a newbie on photo editing. I am excited about the Xara Design Pro X that you mentioned here, how does it fare with the adobe photoshop?

Hello - thanks for your message. :) I think Nikon is a good brand to choose - we have Fuji, Canion & Samsung digitals in compact zooms up to DSLR - my daughter is more serious about the cameras than I am, but we both like to click away :)

Xara - a favoured and powerful software fro Windows pc's is very good - it combines Vector, photo and web technologies into a single interface and can use plug ins designed for other systems - I have a few photoshop ones installed in my copy. I don't use Adobe - but I guess being from the UK I grew with the Xara and Computer Concepts (RISCOS) products, which were developed here in the 80's onwards.

They do have trial versions to download I believe. - check them out.
