Thanks May. You set me looking for answers on what I thought I already knew. And I was dismayed (no pun intended) that so many authorities on soul are not sure whether it is separate from spirit and body.

In Genesis, the man became a living soul only after God breathed into him the life-giving spirit Gen2:7. This implies that he was a dead soul before that. I am persuaded that soul is interpreted as existence (i.e. being). As to whether unity of body and soul is required for sex. Only the spirit can give life to the body for the body to carry out the sex function. This function is necessary for people to multiply and increase and replenish the earth as commissioned by God Gen1:28. It is also necessary to obey Paul's admonition to spouses not to defraud one another ICor7:5. There is a difficulty which I think is minor for this purpose. In Hebrew, Greek (and my native Shona) the three words wind, air and spirit are translated from the same word, the choice is dictated by the translator’s beliefs rather than the context.

What is a problem in my view is when sex is perverted as in sexual immorality. Then there is conflict between the body and the spirit. Psychology shows that the conflict is intrapersonal (that is a person against themselves) and is the cumulative result of the stress from having new sex partners. When matured it causes impotence and is most worrisome in a remarriage.
