Women as objects of violence

Walter Astrada spent most of the last five years researching the facts, collecting, photographing, and providing financing to complete his ambitious project - Wrap in the violence, which are exposed daily to women around the world. At first he used only their own funds, but then won World Press for one of his photos. In addition, he is a Fellow of the grant Revela Oleiros in 2008 (the money went for the photo shoot in the Congo) and Alexia Foundation grant in 2009.

At the recent Festival of Photojournalism Visa POUR L'Image, Astrada received a grant from the Getty Foundation in the amount of $ 20,000, which will allow him to complete his project. He's going to work in Norway, "to demonstrate that even in Western democracies, where women enjoy legal equality and financial parity, they suffer from violence."

A well-meaning man is a man who believes women should be respected. A well-meaning man would
not assault a woman. A well-meaning man, on the surface, at least, believes in equality for women. a
well-meaning man believes in womenís rights. A well-meaning man honors the women in his life. A
well-meaning man, for all practical purposes, is a nice guy, a good man.

Itís time for those of us who are ìwell-meaning menî to start acknowledging the role male privilege and
socialization plays in sexual assault, domestic violence as well as all forms of violence against women..
As well-meaning men, we must begin to acknowledge and own our responsibility to be part of the
solution to ending violence against women.
