The Lowdown on Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are clusters of swollen, inflamed blood vessels and tissue. They are usually internal but sometimes external. Often there are no symptoms other than bleeding, but external hemorrhoids, in particular, can be painful and itchy. Most men develop hemorrhoids at some time in their lives. Though rarely a serious risk to your health, hemorrhoids can be painful and uncomfortable. Here's how to deal with them.

Anything that increases pressure inside the anal canal or abdominal area, such as obesity, increases the risk of hemorrhoids. Aging and genetics also play a role. Constipation has often been blamed for causing hemorrhoids, but it may be that habitually straining while moving your bowels, rather than constipation itself, promotes or at least aggravates hemorrhoids. Frequent bouts of diarrhea can also contribute to the problem.
