The Hollywood Mermaid

Mermaid: A Mermaid is a mythological aqutic creature with a female human head, arms, and torso and the tail of a fish. A male version of a "Mermaid" is known as "Merman" and in general both males and females are known as "Merfolk". Mermaids are represented in the folklore, literature and popular ulture of many countries worldwide.

I saw a blog on here a few days ago about a baby girl born with the rare condition where her legs were fused together like a mermaids lower parts. The baby had no rectum and no sexual or reproductive organs. Do you think this condition may have been the foundation for such myths (Mermaid).
