Human Rights

In my view there is no question of any person being born with superior rights to anyone else.  We may not be born equal in intellect, physique, or financial background - but none of those factors should deprive people of the fundamental respect that we all should show to all our brothers and sisters - the right to a free life with access to all the basic needs that make life sustainable.

Long ago when slavery was a blight upon decent society in western countries, it took brave men to stand up for the slaves and demand an end to trading in the lives of people. The process of change caused conflicts as those making fortunes from slave labour and trade held out as long as they could.

Sadly there are still slave traders in our world now - look at this shocking report from Gina-Marie Cheeseman, published on Care2.com yesterday:-

Hi Dave - thanks for commenting - it is a shocking issue, and one we need to deal with en masse to ensure the evil practise is ended without further delay.

Hi Edward, thanks for commenting. Care2.com (which published the report) is a site where a great many members bring serious matters to our attention, but I've seldom been as deeply affected since the news of the Haiti earthquake...

Charity starts in the home. To bad most families these days are ripped apart due to economic factors that destroy, rather than support, the unity and sanctity of the home. People learn ethics at home from parents and siblings. If a person has a dysfunctional upbringing and never had a positive mentor, nurturing an ethical lifestyle will be impossible. How can we instill the right values in people when we tear down their initial foundation?...V

A bit off topic Vincent, but yes charity should start at home - and extend out from there as far as possible.

The old "I'm looking after mine and the rest can sort themselves out" stance is no better than ignoring your next door neighbour., Much of the slavery seen these days is related to human trafficking of desperate people who hoped to be getting work overseas, but as illegal immigrants are deprived of rights that even our poorest residents have. When the economic tide has turned more emphatically against the western economies, will your grandchildren be begging on the streets, or enslaved in a the house of rich people in far away countries where they have no knowledge of the language, never see daylight or fresh air and are lucky to get a half day to rest once a week?

But it doesn't matter where they come from or where they are taken - human rights are recognized by international laws and agreements, yet much of the abuse and that includes the extremes of forced prostitution are not only know about, but actively used by the rich and powerful who hide illegal immigrant servants in their houses as domestic earning less than a child with a newspaper round. And those rich men that use prostitutes don't worry that the often underage child is an unwilling victim caught up in a lifestyle your poorest neighbours would not endure.

Slavery is 100%wrong - no matter where, no matter when - it represents the worst collapse of decent values and is a stain on those societies that use it that does not wash away ....

I remin firmly on the side of humanity - you are all my brothers and sisters and i won't judge you by colour, language, wealth or religion. But I will take note of your morality, your charity and your contribution to fellow men. That is what I judge people on - because that defines who they truly are..
