Life is not easy. In every corner lies a difficulty. Some may be bearable and some are so hard to face. This is the reality of life. I, as a daughter and a sister, wish to do the best I can in order to help my parents and my four siblings, along with my sister-in-law who stays with us in our simple house.

We have already recovered emotionally from the death of one of my brothers. He passed away on the 3rd of November 2003. It was hard to accept that he was gone but I knew there was a reason why it had to happen. He fell from a truck, broke his head, and died on the spot, according to the driver. It had been a year, and even though it still hurts, the family feels much better than before.

Early in my life's journey I had to face the harsh realities of existence. While still in high school, I started to help my parents earn our daily living. While studying I was selling "yema" and "balekutsa." (local finger-food delicacies). When I proceeded to college, the economic burden became much harder so I decided to stop studying to help my mother in her job as a laundry woman. My father used to sell sand and gravel gathered from the river but was soon prohibited by the government agency Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Almost everyday my father and I had to help my mother wash 3 sacks of dirty clothes. With our very survival at stake, my father decided to return to getting sand and gravel from the river, sneaking in at night. Every time I saw my father fighting the cold air to get to the river; makes me feel like being pierced in the heart. He was doing it for our sake, illegally perhaps, but there was no other option. We needed food, so we needed money. We also had to sustain other needs, foremost of which was the education of my other siblings.
