On the 20th of October 1992, while a storm was violently raging outside, a bouncing baby girl was born to Joy Basmayor. The mother, just turning 18, considered it a blessing, although the father did not even bother to give support before and during delivery. The baby, who was born premature, extremely fragile, and had fever at that time, had to go through a blood transfusion procedure. Since the survival of that little baby was put to a test and was therefore considered miraculous, the doctor suggested that they name her Rosario. To avoid financial inhibition, the baby had to be taken out of the hospital although she was not yet perfectly well. Since they had to travel to Leyte by sea for 6 to 8 hours, improvisations were made for someone too young to travel that long – glass bottles filled with warm water served as some sort of incubation apparatus. There was no electricity and no lights when they arrived in Leyte. Relatives took care of both mother and child and later accepted them as their own family.
Rosario was weak and often had to be brought to a hospital for medical attention. The economic situation the family was in, compelled them to wonder whether she should be put up for adoption. Her mother disagreed, so when the baby reached the age of one, decided
