What is the Biggest Challenge You've Faced in Life and What Did You Learn From It?

Pat Bond
Things that presented a challenge. Not being able to see clearly started to present a challenge. My husband went through cataract surgery and the same opthomologist told me that my left eye was ready. My response was that my eye might be ready, but I was not. I was bothered by glare around lights at night and wouldn't drive unless it was absolutely necessary. I even began to doubt my ability to cross busy intersections on foot, especially where there were no pedestrian signals.

I began interviewing my friends and associates that I knew had been through cataract surgery, and attended a seminar presented by a group in a nearby city. At the seminar I signed up for an evaluation and then scheduled the surgery. I was terrified--experienced palpitations and lost sleep worrying about it.
Finally the day came and I had the left eye fixed. Most of the morning I was uncomfortable, but by afternoon I was out the door walking with my broad brimmed hat and sunglasses. The second surgery was a breeze, hardly uncomfortable at all. In the week between I noticed many things--that my "good" eye, the right one, was not good at all. I could see clearly with the new lens; colors were vivid and glare was gone. If I covered the right eye, a white wall was snow white, but with the right eye it was dingy yellow.
What a remarkable difference! I also opted for two focal length lenses, the traditional distance lens for my left eye, the dominant one, and an intermediate (one diopter) lens for the right eye. The left eye is 20/20 and the right eye is 20/45. I can read the newspaper in good light and see the computer screen without glasses. I can drive and watch TV without glasses, but I got prescription lenses anyway because I am more comfortable reading with glasses.
I have worn glasses since high school, so I don't mind wearing them. However, the surgery has made me less dependent on glasses. I wear $5 sunglasses that are polarized and have UV protection. I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
As we age, things do evolve that we need to address. It was difficult for me to deal with my deteriorating vision, but having done so I am rewarded with a new appreciation for the beauty around me.
