Be a forward thinker: consuming more beta-carotene may save your brain, according to a new Harvard study. Scientists found that men who took 50mg of the antioxidant every other day for 15 years significantly delayed cognitive aging compared with those who skipped the supplement. "Beta-carotene appears to help fight the oxidative stress that damages brain cells over time," says study author Francine Grodstein, ScD. "The key may be to take action early, before cognitive function has a chance to decline." So take a daily multivitamin and eat plenty of foods high in beta-carotene, which includes carrots, musk melon, pumpkins and other orange-coloured vegetables.
