A back-story creates a vision of who your characters are and why they do what they do. It is all the relevant stuff that starts before Day 1 of your novel. It’s the events that led up to the events of the novel, the history of the place, the character’s past. It is stuff important for the writer to know in order to create a well-rounded character.
Characters are what they do, and what they do reveals who they are. It is like a vicious cycle.
