child on leash - photo credit badparenting.orgChildren on leashes piss me off. Sorry if you tether up your kid and feel good about it. I think it's one of the most degrading things you can do to a child.

Plus a a lot of the time, it turns into exasperated parents dragging their children instead of picking them up. I've personally witnessed parents doing this in stores, malls and

poor leash-boy, I saw him again today - his mother was texting while he was running out in front of her. He ran into the street while the dumb cow was looking at her phone - what's the purpose of a child leash again?

what kind of parents are they?

@Leny - I've never seen this kid with a male figure at all - only his incredibly lazy mother. She has this amazing body where she has one normal hand and the other ends in a cell phone. I've said "Hello" a few times and she just sniffs and keeps walking....

....and there goes leash woman walking her boy dog past my house......

omg!! that type of thing completely ticks me off!!! grrrrrrrrrr wow! There is a thing called a stroller you put your child in there if you are afraid they aren't capable of hand holding!!! My son is 2 and he holds my hand and walks through the stores and will walk on the sidewalk perfectly fine. Lets see how do I get my 2 year old to do that umm I'm a parent and make it known that he will go no where without my hand in his. These people need to take responsibility instead of treating them like a dog if they wanted a dog they should have got one they need to quit mating that is for dang sure!!

Thank you April~~~~ I've gotten a few emails from mothers that think it's okay but still I'm noticing they chose to write me and not comment here LOL.... so they must have SOME doubts about it.

@Jenny = the most shocking thing to me is how leashes mean you don't really have to watch your child - I found a dozen videos of people just dragging their children not realizing they had fallen.

my mom did have a arm wrap she got it because my sis went throuigh the hiding under racks of clothes so as a precaution that he decided he wanted to do something he wasnt suppose to do he was the type that would pull his hand in his sleve of a shirt to let me go trantums if use correctly theres no problem but as parents aint they still worried my bro learned within a few weeks how to undo them so how they not worried how their mind at that much of an ease? even with it my mom checked checked to make sure he didnt do his escape plan lol i feel if you try everything and everything then yes try it but dont use it as a i dont have to watch what im doing as a parent or what he is doing the thing is not 100% fool proff its a string wiuth volcoro of course its not gonna hold a kid for very long and i gotta ask how those kids not learning how to undo them i wonder if some of those mothers aint add something to make them strong because the 1 my mom had was like a cheap watch band the waterproff ones

Wow. This post has really opened my eyes. I never really thought the leashes were a bad idea. That comes from my major fear of my daughter being abducted. But, now I'm thinking about it and realizing that if someone wants her, they can CUT the darn thing. I haven't needed or used one at this point, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Seeing these people use it as an alternative for parenting is apalling though!
@JoLynn 3am Art's comment about the mom with a cell phone at the end of her arm! So sad!

@Melissa olczyk: good point about kiddos figuring out how to take them off too!

If a parent is using a leash as a way to ignore her responsibility of training her child or being lazy about teaching the importance of her child staying by her side as they walk down the street then I would agree that a child leash is an awful thing. Obviously, some people misunderstand what parenting is all about. The responsibility of a child is more than just putting food in front of him and "keeping" him until he is an official adult; it's about teaching him and raising him to be a responsible and productive adult.

@Shoshana - SO TRUE! I just think it's so degrading to put a child on a leash - this is a little human being we're talking about and teaching impulse control and restraint in running away is part of good parenting ;)

i cant stand to see it it pisses me off i want to tell them let me put you on that leach see how you like it!!

Thank you Jessica!!!! I actually got hate mail from people over that post. I had a mother write me and say the leash made it possible for her to go shopping "and not watch her child every minute" ..... o_O .... people amaze me.

ok I agree that once used to drag your children the leash becomes an abusive item. But I am a stay at father to two very spirited little girls, and i also live with a disabillity. My girls love the extra freedom the leash provides over a cart or stroller at the grocery, or on walks. And I appreciate the added safety of my child cannot dart into traffic, I know full well the damage a car can cause. The leashes are a great item if used properly. I will pick up my kids before I will ever drag them. The older of my 2 little ones has learned to not let go of daddy's hand on walks, my 20 month old is still learning. It is for my childrens safety that I put them on a leash.

It is truly a shame, to be that ignorant as a parent to think it is the right thing to leash your child..Lets turn it around and see if the parent likes it..The leash should be wrapped around the adults neck..

I think it's one of those tools that is misused. I have never used one (I stick with strollers), but I can see them being useful in crowds, etc. where I was afraid of them getting away from me and into danger. It should never replace good parenting/supervision, but might be a tool in the right hands. Great post!
