The Commodores

by Rose Jay on May 13, 2011

Yesterday I had three different songwriting appointments. Although there's so much more to do as far as the goals I've set for myself, I feel like I'm already in heaven! Being able to work on music throughout my entire day and collaborating with extremely talented musicians who are not only talented, but also focused and driven, is something I've dreamed about. It's finally coming true!

My first appointment was with Bjorn from Sweden. I met Bjorn a couple of nights ago at Steve Baughman's mixing clinic at school.

On a side note,Steve B has mixed music for Grammy award winning, multi-platinum albums. Some of the artists he's worked on is Pussycat Dolls, Eminem, 50 Cent, Pink, Destiny's Child, Snoop Dogg, and many more. The first time I ever met Steve was at Game's session for Game's latest album that was released. When I met him, I didn't know he was a world class mixer. But I thought he was nice so we exchanged Facebook info and had kept in touch.

At the mixing clinic, Steve allowed students to play their music and he gave us feedback. Out of the students that played their music, there were two students/producers who's music really stood out to me. Bjorn was one of them. I approached both students at the end of the clinic to exchange numbers. Fortunately for me, they liked the song I played as well. Bjorn's music is Euro-pop/Trance. I thought if I could have him collaborate with Lamon and Loidimo, mixing Bjorn's sound with their urban style would result in something even more incredible.

When I introduced Loidimo and Bjorn to each other, they seemed to get along instantly. After we each gave our feedback for the song Bjorn played, we decided to reconvene on another day.

Loidimo and I continued writing. We worked on two different songs that we had previously started. We had to finish it because we're going to start recording both songs this weekend.

The last appointment I had yesterday was with my newest friend/producer, Soraya. Soraya grew up in New Zealand and she's been in the United States for the last two years to pursue a career in music. Her music is so different than anything I've ever heard. It's a mixture of urban, jungle, and pop. We started writing to a song and the chemistry was awesome. It came easy and natural and we had so much fun...the way music creation should be.

When Soraya and I decided to take a break, we went outside and got to know a little bit more about each other's lives. I asked her how she got into music. She said her dad was a musician so she's been in a music environment her entire life. Then she asked me, "Have you ever heard of the Commodores?" I said, "Of course." She said, "My dad was the bass player in that band." I knew there was something different about her. I could hear it in her music. But I had no idea...

I'm finally meeting dedicated, reliable friends who also have a passion/obsession for creating music as I do. I'm so happy! Bless the Divine for bringing these new friends into my life.
