Building Your Songwriting Resume

When I first started on this journey of being a songwriter, I was like many beginning songwriters. I thought I'd coat-tail off of someone who already had the connections and success I wanted. So I sought out a producer who had already been on the Billboard charts. Although this producer was definitely talented (hence the Gold record sales status he had earned the previous year with the RIAA), I quickly learned there is a lot more than talent and previous success to consider when looking for collaborators. For example, this producer never showed up on time to sessions. He'd show up at least an hour or more later than the scheduled time. He'd end sessions early to go meet up with his friends. Worst of all, I didn't feel comfortable with him and his manager. Perhaps because their knowledge about the business surpassed mine so much, but something inside me told me their business practices weren't ethical. I didn't feel like I could trust them. I never finished the two songs we started working on. I stopped returning their calls because it didn't feel good doing music with them, and music is supposed to be something fun.

The upside of that experience is that I finally had two songs (unfinished) that I could use
