Session w/ Songwriter of Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)"

I just came out of the Women in Music panel with Melanie Fiona (Songwriter, Artist-"Give It To Me Right", "It Kills Me", "Ay Yo"), Cristyle "The Ink" Johnson (Songwriter- "Only Girl (In the World)", "Touch My Body", "The 1", "Angel"), Andrea Martin (Songwriter-"Before You Walk Out of My Life", "It Kills Me", Better in Time", "Don't Let Go (Love)"), and Kelly Price (Songwriter, Artist-"Friend of Mine", "You Should've Told Me"). This was my favorite panel so far. These women are not only talented, they're smart, business saavy, and they have a great sense of humor. No wonder they're all so successful!

These ladies touched on different subjects such as their songwriting process, how to carry yourself as a woman in this male dominated music industry, and different lessons they've learned throughout their songwriting careers. The following is what I learned and will take with me on my songwriting journey:

1. Songwriting Process- Be professional but keep it fun. Songwriting is something I chose to do because I love doing it. When a song writes itself it's the most amazing feeling in the world. But sometimes I get frustrated when I can't hear the melody or lyrics that would fit just right. It was relieving for me to hear that hit songwriters such as these women all have compilation of songs that they've never released because even they still write songs that suck. It was relieving to hear that there are times when they doubt themselves and their songwriting abilities. It was a relief because this is the way I feel sometimes about
