Music is My Dream Job

by Rose Jay on April 19, 2011

Music is my dream job. Some people may describe the life of an aspiring songwriter as a "grind", but to me it's a new adventure everyday.

On December 31, 2008 I packed my car with everything I owned to move from Austin, TX to Los Angeles, CA to go after my dream. Although the ride since then has definitely had its ups and downs, I wouldn't trade my life for the world! Even when I didn't know where I was going to live, couch surfing (living in living rooms due to lack of funds) and living on a budget of ramen noodles (ah the world of an aspiring musician)...it was all worth it! (Besides, these conditions were way better than when I was in basic training in the Army. Lol.)

I admit at times there's these little voice that tell me "You're not good enough...you're too old to start a new career...you've been doing this for 2 years and haven't accomplished sh**...you should have a backup plan just in case." I realized those voices weren't mine. Those were remnants of negativity of the negative people I had around me. And sadly, the negativity was from some of the people who were closest to me. Perhaps they didn't think I could do it because it's not something they could see themselves do and they didn't want me to get hurt. Perhaps they didn't want me to do it because it would make them feel bad for staying in jobs they hated so much. I don't know.

Whatever their reasons were, I learned how to shut those negative voices up and not talk to me as much...by not being around those
