Origin of the Christmas Tree

There are several legends pertaining to the onset of Christmas tree traditions from Germany and some of them may even sound bizarre, however, let's have a look at some of them.

Saint Boniface

One popular legend is that of Saint Boniface, who in 722, came across some heathens who were in the midst of sacrificing a child at the base of a large oak tree. According to the story, Saint Boniface rushed to the site and cut down the huge oak tree to stop the sacrifice of the infant. Now, it so happened that a fir tree sprouted from the very base of that oak tree. Seeing this, Saint Boniface exclaimed that the growth of the evergreen tree with branches pointing to heaven indicated that it was a holy tree and a symbol of eternal life. He is also believed to have used the tree to symbolize the holy trinity.

Martin Luther

The most well-known Christmas tree legend is that of Martin Luther, the one who initiated the Protestant reformation.
