Lou Gehrig, baseball player - One of the most dramatic moments in baseball history took place in Yankee Stadium in New York on July 4, 1939. Lou Gehrig, a humble and popular star, had been diagnosed as having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal disease. Between the games of a Fourth of July doubleheader, Gehrig appeared at home plate and delivered an emotional farewell speech. After telling the crowd, "I'm the luckiest man on the face of the earth," he stepped away from the plate for the last time and wiped the tears from his eyes. Twenty-three months later he died, at the age of 38.
