Democracy in the Middle East

The popular uprisings that have spread throughout the Middle East have caused both exuberance and worry. On one hand, the prospect of finally having democracy in the Middle East is seen as possibly ushering in a era of freedom for populations that have never experienced it. On the other hand, the main worry is that these popular uprisings won't bring about legitimate, peacefuldemocracies, but bring about radical Islamic regimes in the style of Iran and Hamas. The threat of this happening has been an underlying reason why the United States and many other countries have been somewhat content with allying themselves with non-democratic Middle Eastern countries.
