This story brought tears to my eyes...

Carl was a quiet man.  He didn't talk much.  He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake.  Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well.

Before his retirement, he took the bus to work each morning.  The lone sight of him walking down the street often worried us.  He had a slight limp from a bullet wound received in WWII.  Watching him, we worried that although he had survived WWII, he may not make it through our changing uptown neighborhood with its ever-increasing random violence, gangs and drug activity.

This is a great story that has circulated in several different forms, over the years. The message is always the same. Doing the right thing doesn't always make us feel good, at the time. The seed planted in humiliation always sprouts into a great testimony.

I totally agree. The great thing about life is that we have opportunities to redeem ourselves...

Wow Arlene I have tears in my eyes from reading this story. Amazing. We have so many gangs anymore and I thought this story was going to end in terror and I see the moral of the whole story. How many people can forgive someone after being so brutally attacked. I love that the lesson was learned from the one gang member. Some are not so lucky to escape this type of crime. In our area just recently there was two robberies and one person who just lost his wife to cancer a week earlier was shot in a home burglary leaving the only child without a mother and father. I pray they find these criminals soon. I thank you for sharing this story Arlene. There is a true moral ending to it and it touched my heart. Blessings friend.
