Some Experiments

We made ginger beer, saurkraut, almond milk and injera. We have three sets of very dark, very out of focus, very large photos taken with our housemate's broken camera with no viewfiunder that I can't get usable just yet, but I am working on it!

So we started our experiments with making ginger ale.

We used a big glass jug, a funnel, water, fresh ginger, bread yeast, lemon juice and fair trade demerrara sugar.

We finely grated a tablespoon of the ginger.

Natural Head Lice Removal

The topic came up recently on The Compact Yahoo Group and this was my response. Happy to take your questions by email. I can help you put together a kit and will look through your family's hair here if you like.

Lice are epidemic here because of resistance to pesticides.

We get them annually throughout pre school and elementary school.

This method uses oil to suffocate live lice and loosen the glued on nits (eggs).
It uses lice combing to removed the nits.
It uses lavender essential oil to repel and kill live lice.
It uses repetition of steps because this is ALWAYS required!
We use a nit comb made from bamboo ($.99) but you may prefer a metal comb. Thus kind works http://www.pestid.msu.edu/Portals/0/dnnPhotoGallery/967/643TN.jpg . This kind in plastic or metal tears your hair out and is otherwise infuriating to use http://www.ladyjayne.co.nz/img/categoryimages/NitComb_Plastic.gif Here's the simple non toxic method most folks here use:

1. Soak hair overnight in any vegetable oil, making sure the oil is all over the scalp and first 2cm of hair.
Tie a plastic bag over the hair, then put on a towel turban style to sleep with and the pillow cases won't get greasy.

2. In the morning, comb the hair into the bath tub using a lice comb. Nits are glued to the first 1cm of the hair shaft, but the vegetable oil will have loosened them. Comb away, then rinse with apple cider vinegar. Wash a few times with dishsoap or shampoo with citrus oils in it. The hair will dry soft but will not be greasy.

3. In bright sunlight, meticulously comb out the hair with a nit comb section by section. Nits look like clear or brown raindrops glued to the hair shaft within

Essential Oils for Colds, Flu, Bronchitis and Congestion

Essential Oils Kill Viruses plus Boost and Strengthen the Immune System

Plants are the oldest medicines. Many essential oils are powerful anti viral agents - even common ones such as eucalyptus, lemon, ravensara, niaouli, frankincense, peppermint, cinnamon, & oregano oils are well known & effective against cold and flu. My Emo Blend Courage is very effective against infections and congestion.

We look today to pharmaceutical drugs instead of the tried-and-true natural remedies that work more slowly, but usually more effectively, than drugs and antibiotics. As microbes adapt to one-hit-wonder drugs, we put ourselves increasingly at risk of pandemics of unseen proportions.

Why? Because Essential Oils Are Intelligent Chemistry

Essential oils are comprised of complex mixtures of molecules that work together ("in synergy") to kill viruses and bacteria and to support our bodies’ health. Plant essences are both the blood and immune systems of the plant, and are constantly adapted and "updated" to the changing environment and microbial challenges around the plant. Unlike drugs, viruses do not develop resistance to essential oils because each batch of oil is unique depending on a growing season’s temperature range, wind, rain, time of the harvest, and more. For this reason, oils can be more effective at beating cold and flu than drugs – and they continue to work long after a virus would have developed resistance to conventional treatments.

Use Essential Oils Whenever You or Your Loved Ones Are Sick

~ Use oils inhaled, on a pendant or diluted on the skin AS SOON AS a symptom appears. You may avoid the illness altogether!

~ Inhale or reapply the oil or blend often, every hour or more often. You may wake the next day symptom-free.

~ Use lemon, ravensara, or niaouli for children, as these are much milder than eucalyptus. DO NOT use eucalyptus with babies as it is too cooling.

Best Essential Oils for Colds and 'Flus and How to Apply Them

Lemon - Lemon is great for boosting the immune system from within. Have a slice of lemon or tablespoon of lemon juice in every glass of water throughout the day until evening. Traditionally, a drop of lemon essential oil in water can be taken as first aid to prevent infections. Cold pressed lemon is photosensitizing so it should not be applied to skin.

Peppermint and Eucalyptus - These oils are cool and soothing and are known to clear the respiratory system and ease breathing. They can be applied directly to the neck, throat, chest, and back to open the lungs or inhaled to soothe the sinuses. Peppermint and eucalyptus are safe to apply on the skin, but I recommend putting them in a lotion or carrier oil.

Frankincense - One of the most powerful immune-boosting oils, the highest quality frankincense does not come cheap but it’s worth its weight in gold. Frankincense is mild on the skin and can be applied anywhere.

Oregano - One of the most popular essential oils for treating everything from cold and flu to warts, oregano is considered a “hot” oil (it will heat up and tingle) and should be used well diluted with a carrier oil and with caution. Oregano is best applied on the back, shoulders, and the bottoms of the feet. DO NOT INGEST IT - this will only sterilize your gut and kill helpful as well as harmful bacteria. If you are colonized by microbes in a particular organ, see a Registered Aromatherapy Health Practitioner for supervised treatment.

How To Protect Yourself Against the 'Flu

The 2009 'Flu (so-called Swine 'Flu) is fundamentally just like any 'flu. The common 'flu kills 4,000 people every year in Canada alone.

Viruses and bacteria are, of course, very dangerous to populations who have never been exposed to them. An estimated 90 million people in the Americas died of infections such as the common cold, spread by European explorers and invaders, just 500 years ago. The Spanish 'Flu of 1918 killed upwards of 50 million people worldwide. Those with underdeveloped or compromised immune systems are most vulnerable – flu can lead to serious illness in babies, children and seniors. 'Flu is also dangerous for those whose immune systems are compromised by poverty – chronic stress, malnutrition, lack of sanitation and clean water, and inadequate emergency medical treatment can be a death sentence in a pandemic.

The good news is that seniors may be experiencing protection against this version of the 'flu because they have developed anti bodies to similar 'flu strains over the course of their lives – according to a MedBroadcast article. http://www.medbroadcast.com/channel_health_news_details.asp?news_id=1790...

For us in Canada, who live in relative wealth, the 'flu pandemic is not as dangerous as prescription drugs. Adverse reactions to prescription drugs cause 10,000 deaths a year in Canadian hospitals when drugs are used as prescribed, Oakville MP Terence Young said when his teenage daughter died suddenly apparently from a prescribed digestive medication. Probably another 10,000 deaths occur outside of hospitals from prescribing errors and adverse reactions, he added, noting that less than one per cent of reactions get reported.

Conventional drug therapies, in my view, are a last resort and may not be very effective. Our Canadian public health dollars are much better spent in my view on ensuring clean water in every community and promoting hand washing and immune supporting nutrition and lifestyles. I find the emergence of “Swine 'Flu” and the worldwide scramble to stock up on TAMIFLU highly suspect. As one comment to a CBC article reads: Guess which one person gets 10% of each Tamiflu dose sold? Give up? Answer: Donald Rumsfeld Snopes.com has an informative article on the political aspects of TAMIFLU

How To Beat The 'Flu and Panic-fluenza!

Everywhere I go, it seems I am hearing about the 'flu - H1N1, the seasonal 'flu, vaccines, and advice on how to protect ourselves. I also hear a lot about people taking oregano essential oil orally, especially while doing my working hours at Karma Coop's cash. As a Registered Aromatherapy Health Practitioner, I need to tell you that ingesting oregano http://www.anarreshealth.ca/node/556 is not on my list of things to do to prevent getting the 'flu, H1N1 included!

This IS my list of things to do to prevent the 'flu!

1. WASH YOUR HANDS. Often. Before eating. Before putting your hands near your mouth or anyone else's! Wash with water, soap if you have it, hand sanitizer if you have to, natural hand sanitizer if you can http://www.anarreshealth.ca/node/601. Water and friction remove microbes from the hands. Drying helps.

2. SLEEP 8+ HOURS PER NIGHT. People who get less than 8 hours of rest per night get 4 times more colds and 'flus than people who get 8 or more hours sleep!

3. GET OUTSIDE! Being out of doors makes you fitter, lets your body create Vitamin D, and gets you breathing cleaner air. Your fitness, your vitamin D levels and your exposure to (generally dirty) indoor air are all factors in your likelihood of getting H1N1 and in avoiding complications.

4. SANITIZE YOUR AIR (AND HANDS) NOT YOUR GUT. 'Flus and colds are spread by droplet infection - microbes shot into the air at shocking speeds through sneezing and coughing. The microbes can stay for days on undisturbed surfaces. I recommend some comparatively mild essential oils to cleanse the air, such
