Pinoy in death row

by chie warc on December 04, 2011

The government is “exhausting other means” to have Vice President Jejomar Binay make a case in behalf of the Filipino in death row in China for drug trafficking.

In an interview with dzRB, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said Malacanang respects the decision of China to thumb down Binay’s “mercy mission.”

However, “our diplomatic channels are still there. We can still exhaust those. We will continue our discussions with embassy officials to be able to convey our appeal on humanitarian and compassionate grounds,” she said when asked what Malacanang could still do.

The 35-year-old Filipino is scheduled to be executed on December 8 after he was caught trying to smuggle 1.5 kilos of heroin into China in 2008.

Meanwhile, the family of the Filipino set to be executed called on the public to pray for them as they face a big challenge in their lives.

They appealed for understanding on why they chose not to answer queries from the media since they want to protect their sick mother.

Through OFW advocate Susan Ople, one of the sisters of the convicted Filipino said: "Iparating niyo na lang po sa kanila na tulungan ang aming pamilya sa pagdarasal at hinihingi pa rin po namin ang privacy para po sa aming nanay. Marami pong salamat."

Ople said the family is “deeply grateful to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and to those who continue to offer prayers for their brother.”

They also thanked the Department of Foreign Affairs and Binay for their continued assistance and guidance.

Meanwhile, the Ople Center, a non-profit organization engaged in labor and migration concerns, asked the Philippine government “to declare an all-out war against international drug rings that recruit Filipinos to act as drug mules.”

It also urged the government to closely monitor the death row cases involving Filipinos around the world.

A shiny new black Ferrari now sits in the garage at Pacquiao s La Palazzo apartment in Los Angeles, California. Pacquiao has been spotted driving his new car around town after he purchased the 458 Italia. With a 570 horsepower V8 engine under the hood, Pacquiao s Ferrari can speed off within a matter of seconds, mabilis masyado, first time ko sa Ferrari, the boxer admitted. Before spotting the Ferrari, Pacquiao was being offered a Mercedes Gullwing for $210,000. Pacquiao seems to have taken a liking to the faster Ferrari, taking it for a price tag of $225,000. Asked about the splurge, Pacquiao brushes it off as simply a gift to himself, regalo ko sa sarili ko, he said. The Ferrari now holds a special place as the crown jewel of the pound- for-pound king s car collection which includes a Porsche, a Mercedes, an armored Escalade, a Lincoln Navigator, and several SUVs.

SIRTE, Libya - Former Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered on Thursday as fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Libya's interim rulers said.

His killing, which came swiftly after his capture near Sirte, is the most dramatic single development in the Arab Spring revolts that have unseated rulers in Egypt and Tunisia and threatened the grip on power of the leaders of Syria and Yemen.

"He (Gaddafi) was also hit in his head," National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

Japan's royal palace said Tuesday Princess Aiko, the only child of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako, had been hospitalised because of a persistent high temperature.

The nine-year-old princess has been running a fever since the weekend, the imperial household agency said.

She "was hospitalised Tuesday for examinations and treatment... as the fever and symptoms such as a cough are continuing," a palace spokeswoman said.

The Japanese public reacted with horror in March last year when the palace announced Aiko, a grandchild of the emperor, had stayed away from school after suffering anxiety over "the wild behaviour of a few boys".

She later went back to classes accompanied by her mother,
