Learn To Laugh

by Jose Ronito on May 22, 2013

Why do we take ourselves so seriously? Why can't  we look at the bright side and learn to discover humor in everything we do? Without laughter life becomes one colorless, drab existence. Life without laughter is like eating eggs without salt. Religion, which is supposed to promote a happy outlook, is often made to look staid and stiffly formal, like those saintly cathedral icons that don't even know how to smile! The statement "You look saintly" for instance, has taken on a negative connotation that you don't look cheerful. That to be religious is to be serious is a misrepresentation of God. I don't believe in God who does not know how to laugh.

The Bible mentions God laughing (Psalm 37:13;59:8). On one occasion God "cracked a joke" that caused Abraham and Sarah to laugh. You see, Abraham was old and Sarah was well beyond menopause, and God said they were going to have a son the following year! The couple laughed at what they thought was God's sense of humor .Laughter reverberated in that humorless home and brought rejuvenation and life.

Developing a sense of humor is a key to youthfulness. Humor is therapeutic and an essential ingredient to good mental health. Scientists have discovered that laughter has a profound effect on virtually every important organ in the human body. Laughter reduces healthsapping tensions and relaxes the tissues; it also exercises the most vital organs. Laughter brings a sweet release from the pressures that come with our work.

Abraham Lincoln said,"With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die."

There never is a day that I am not on the lookout for a funny incident or story. Two of my favorite jokes are told in the book Sweet and Sour by C.S. Canonigo. A patient in a mental hospital said, "Doc I feel something awful with myself." "What is it all about?" asked the doctor. "I feel that I am a dog." "And since when did you start feeling that way?" "I started feeling this way since I was a puppy!" On another occasion a big-mouthed woman frantically cried, "Oh, doctor,I swallowed the harmonica that I was playing." Said the doctor,"Sit down and be happy." With a puzzed look on her face she asked, "Be happy? What for?" That you were not playing a piano!"

I mentioned Sarah earlier. Well, the day came when she delivered a baby. She was 90 years old. Sarah said"God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me" (Genesis 21:6,NIV).

Learning to laugh and to take ourselves less seriously is important to successful living. We need to learn to laugh at good, clean jokes, at others (when appropriate!), with others, and especially at ourselves.

As the saying goes, "He who laughs, lasts."
