For the first time in the  history of Mexico that a woman is head of the federal police. She is under pressure to target the powerful drug cartels.

Maribel Cervantes replaces Facundo Rosas as commissioner general of the federal police, reported the Ministry of Public Security. Cervantes (41) is the first woman to assume this function.

The federal police have fought with the army against drug gangs under the regime of President Felipe Calderon. More than 47,000 people were slain in drug-related violence since Calderon in 2006 decided to take strong action against drug gangs. The financial power of the gangs has been corruption within the police.

28 years jail for Joran van der Sloot

The court in Lima on Friday 13/01/2012 Convicted  Joran to 28 years in prison for robbery murder on the Peruvian Stephany Flores (21).

Joran Van der Sloot also have to pay a sum of 59,000 euros (200,000 Peruvian sol) to the relatives of Flores.

If the Dutchman has served his sentence, he will be put out off Peru.
