Female genital mutilation commonly reffered to as female circumcision was practised by some ancient Asian, Arabic and African communities to signify a rite of passage from childhood to adulthoood. In some western countries such as the U.S, F.G.M was practised in the 19 century to cure hysteria, lesbianism and female masturbation. Although female circumcision is still common in some African societies, it is facing sharp criticism from human rights watchdogs and hence christened; Female genital mutilation.
